Being more economical with your car

Your car is one of the major purchases you will make in your life and is likely to be something you spend a considerable amount of money on. As such, you need to make sure that you are spending your money wisely and not throwing it away.

This applies when buying new or used cars; new cars have the advantage of not having any problems that come with age and time. You can view new cars online or at a dealership to see what cars are available. Due to the government Scrappage scheme, you can gain up to £2000 off the cost of a new car if you scrap a car you have owned for more than 13 months and that is 10 or more years old.

Used cars are different as they will have previous owners. One thing you should always do is carry out a HPI check on the car; this checks if there is any previous finance taken out on a car and all its finance history. It's not unheard of for some buyers to receive letters about the previous owner's debts and potentially lose the car.

Once you have got your car you want to be as economical as possible. You will have enough statutory costs such as insurance, tax and general maintenance costs without adding to it. This means checking potential problems such as tyre pressure is important. In each car there is a drivers manual and within this it will tell you the recommended pressure for your tyres (or written on the sidewall of your tyres); try and stick to this.

If you live near a petrol station then it can be beneficial to only half fill the tank. Filling it up means the car is heavier and the engine has to work harder, filling it half way means there is not as much pressure on the engine and as the petrol station is nearby; it won't cost you much to refill. You can also check online where the cheapest petrol station in your area is.

Sticking to the speed limit and avoiding harsh braking will also increase the lengevity of your car and reduce chances of any brake or engine trouble in the future. If you see any problems you need to deal with them straight away as what may start as a small issue can quickly turn into a large, costly problem.
