Kindle 2 Wireless User Review...
By: J. D. Warrick
Kindle 2 Wireless is to Books as iPod was to Music
I have had my Kindle 2 Wireless for just over a week now and wanted to offer my opinion on this device. First impressions are huge and I have to say my first impression when I opened the very nice packaging this Kindle 2 Wireless arrived in was it is much smaller and sexier than it looked in the pictures. It is very sleek, impossibly thin, and I LOVE the white color. When I turned it on I was welcomed by a wonderfully thought out "getting to know you" tutorial that walked me through the basic functions of the Kindle 2 Wireless.
With this short read I was ready to begin playing with my new toy, seriously there was enough information to start reading right away. Fortunately I had requested a few samples while I was waiting for my Kindle 2 Wireless to arrive and behold they were already there since Amazon thoughtfully loaded my account information into the device thereby making it ready for downloads the minute you turn it on.
Of course samples won't keep you happy long so I went into the menu where the helpful "getting to know you" guide said to go and I was browsing for a new book in no time. I finally settled on Deception Point by Dan Brown and chose to download it. They weren't kidding, in less than a minute (less than 30 seconds really) I was reading my new book, which had been downloaded to my Kindle 2 Wireless in its entirety.
Ok, ok, so this is sounding like a slam dunk fluff review at this point so let me point out the pros and cons.
Pros: Sleek style, easy to hold, the white causes it to disappear as suggested in its description, highly transportable, well thought out button placement, easy to use, adjustable font, ease of downloading new books.
Cons: Not many really but here goes:
1. Many people have complained about the text not being dark enough and I would have to agree. Now anyone who is thinking oh this just won't work, hold on. Just because it isn't dark enough doesn't mean it isn't easy to read. I just think it could be even easier if it was a bit darker. With good lighting (which you should be using to read any "printed" medium) it is very readable and the adjustable font makes up for this shortcoming.
2. Not enough books. Ok, it will take a long time before I run through every book Kindle 2 Wireless has but...I have to say that I have searched for many books that are not available and this is disappointing. I don't necessarily blame Amazon as this is a new technology (relatively anyway) but a wider selection would be nice. Hear that publishers???
That was it and due to those two issues I had to give the Kindle 2 Wireless a 4 star rating. It is a beautiful device, I am completely happy I received it for my Birthday and I believe wholeheartedly that it will do what I wanted it to do...re-Kindle my love of reading. Seriously I can't put it down! I hope you enjoyed my review and if you get one, that you enjoy your Kindle 2 Wireless as well but if you like books...I know you will!
